Alfred Kralik, the most trusted employee at leather goods shop Matuschek and Co in Budapest, is approached for a job by Klara Novak. Kralik is disappointed when she is hired by Mutuschek, as their working relationship becomes more and more fractious. Neither realise that the other is the correspondent they have been writing to via a newspaper lonely hearts column.
