Dark fantasy thriller set in wartime Spain. In 1944, a young girl and her pregnant mother travel to meet her stepfather, a sadistic fascist officer who is battling Republican guerrillas in the mountains of northern Spain. As her mother's health begins to decline and her step-father grows increasingly vicious, she retreats further into a more comforting world. Believing herself to be a member of a mythical royal line, the girl escapes the violence of war-torn Spain by descending on a quest into an abandoned labyrinth populated by fantastic creatures. Directed by Guillermo del Toro, the film was nominated in the Best Foreign Language Film category at the 2007 Academy Awards.
